During the two year period from 2020-2022 the Mid North Coast, along with most of NSW, experienced long periods of above average rainfall, resulting in flash floods through to major flood incidents. These continued high water levels in the Bellinger River caused bank erosion, resulting in parts of the roadway cracking and falling into the river, causing public safety concerns and access issues.

Design and Construction partners for the project were Fortade Group Pty Ltd and NSW Public Works provided managed the project for client, Bellingen Shire Council. The scope of the project was to restore three embankment sections along Kalang road (2 x 25m sections and 1 x 110m). The larger, 110m section involved replacing a 70m section of road that had failed with an improved design better suited to the alluvial soils the road sits on.

Guardrail was replaced and any vegetation removed was offset by Council at another site. As many mangroves as possible were saved during construction to limit the impact on the natural environment.

The project was delivered one month early  (5 month program) and under budget, providing the Bellingen Shire Council with savings in both costs and time as valued outcomes.
