Background

The Net Zero Plan Stage 1: 2020-2030 is the foundation for NSW’s action on climate change and goal to reach net zero emissions by 2050. It outlines the NSW Government’s approach to protect our future by growing the economy, creating jobs and reducing emissions over the next decade.

A key part of this plan is the NSW Government’s Electric Vehicle (EV) commitment, which is to accelerate the adoption of battery electric vehicles and prepare the state’s road network for a low-emissions future.

NSW Procurement is setting targets for all government departments to transition their fleets to electric vehicles. At the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, our goal is to have 50% of our passenger fleet become battery electric by 2026.

Our role

NSW Public Works’ (NSWPW) Bathurst office required EV charging stations to accommodate the introduction of battery electric vehicles.

To achieve this, we drafted a comprehensive contract and completed the tendering process with a contractor from the Transport for NSW Australian EV charging station supplier list.

Local contractors were engaged to carry out the construction works, bolstering the local economy.

Throughout the project, we conducted assessments with the contractor, upskilling them in the use of project management plans and documentation. This not only ensured quality workmanship but also contributed to the development of local expertise and capacity.

Outcomes

NSWPW’s Bathurst office can now charge four electric fleet vehicles, thanks to the installation of two dual charging stations in the fleet carpark. The design allows for additional charging stations in the future.

The project has also fostered better communication and relationships with other agencies that share the building, allowing them to occasionally use the chargers.

This project builds our capability to work with other state government agencies to achieve their fleet vehicle upgrade targets. By demonstrating effective project management, we aim to provide a model for other agencies exploring EV fleets. This is one of the many ways in which NSWPW is helping the state to reach its net zero targets.
