Riverina Western Broken Hill Skate Park upgrade
Key facts
- Two design options within budget provided.
- Functional and varied skate experience.
Background
The existing modular steel skate park in Sturt Park had reached the end of its life and required a complete replacement. The brief was to design and construct a modern urban street-style concrete skate park that caters to users of all ages and abilities, including BMX riders, skateboarders and scooter riders. The design aimed to accommodate multiple diverse users simultaneously while minimising interaction and interference as users navigate through the various obstacles.
Our role
NSW Public Works (NSWPW) prepared a comprehensive design and construct scope of work for the skate park project. This included:
- demolition of the existing skate park,
- salvaging of steel obstacles for donation to a community organisation,
- two design options complete with 3D flythroughs for community consultation, and
- final design of the preferred option.
NSWPW also provided full tender and contract management services to ensure successful project delivery. Tenders were invited from skate park contractors specialising in community skate park construction.
Outcomes
The new skate park provides the youth of Broken Hill a safe, functional, and varied skate experience. A successful regional skate park reduces youth nuisance, anti-social behaviour, provides entertainment and promotes active and healthy lifestyles.
Precise tolerances in construction are crucial for smooth riding and transitions. By understanding the technical nature of skate park construction, NSWPW was able to research and identify specialist contractors suitable to undertake the design and construction work. This reduced the risk of functionality and construction issues that impact the user experience.
The project delivered the following skate park features:
- a balance between street and transition skating
- bowl end
- concrete pump track
- children and beginner’s area
- smart lighting and CCTV security
- fun box, flat bank, step up, hubba, bigger pyramid than existing, ressie, grind ledge, box without coping, A-frame, flyout
- drinking fountain/bubbler shade structure/sails accessibility.
