Background

In 2019/2020, NSW experienced devastating bushfires that destroyed or damaged many homes in the affected regions. The NSW Bushfire Recovery Project is a comprehensive effort to provide disaster relief and assistance to the residents in need.

The project aims to facilitate the reconstruction and rehabilitation of homes in collaboration with the Disaster Relief Grant initiative, NSW Reconstruction Authority (RA), and NSW Public Works (NSWPW).

Our role

NSWPW provided technical leadership, advice and project and contract management services for the project.

We scoped each site for suitability and constructability, managed the design, approval, and delivery of each home, and consulted with each homeowner and RA throughout the process.

The newly constructed homes met the BAL29 Bushfire resistance standards and had full off-grid services, such as wastewater treatment, water storage, and energy generation and storage.

Key facts

  • NSWPW has managed the reconstruction of 92 homes, as of 2023/24 FY.
  • 30 homes built in 2023/24 FY.
  • The homes were located across the east coast of NSW from Eden through to Lismore.
  • Homes were built to BAL 29 Bushfire resistance standards.
  • Most homes were equipped with full off-grid services including wastewater treatment, water storage and energy generation and storage.

Outcomes

The project had several positive outcomes for the residents and the communities. It restored safe and comfortable living spaces, stimulated the local economy, supported the psychological well-being of the affected people, and improved the standards and resilience of the homes. The project also contributed to the broader infrastructure and sustainability of the area, demonstrating the importance of post-disaster recovery efforts.

Through this project, we expanded our residential project delivery capability and understanding of modular construction. We also embraced opportunities to collaborate with local councils, engage with the local communities, and broaden our contractor base.
