Background
The Gunnery is a heritage-listed property in Woolloomooloo, Sydney, that offers creative spaces for artists and arts organisations. It is home to Artspace, one of Australia's leading interdisciplinary spaces for the production and presentation of contemporary art.
Our role
NSW Public Works played a crucial role in the Gunnery Art Space Transformation as the Principal’s Authorised Person. Our responsibilities included procurement and management of the contractor, overseeing contract engagement, administration, and conducting site observations to ensure that every aspect of the project aligned with the client's vision and regulatory standards.
Outcomes
The transformation was completed and opened to the public on 15 December 2023.
Key outcomes included:
- Restoration and upgrade of all three floors, significantly improving the facility’s capacity and accessibility.
- New facilities for learning, outreach, digital broadcast, performances, and public programs on the first floor.
- A new 250m² multipurpose space, including an archive and learning studio, to support a broader range of artistic endeavors and community engagement.
- Improved infrastructure to enhance the building's connection to the local neighbourhood and Sydney Harbour Foreshore.
The Gunnery Artspace’s transformation not only revitalized its physical space but also expanded its capacity to engage with the community and support the arts in Sydney.
