Inmates fit out 165 units for Northern Rivers temporary housing

Following the 2022 floods in the Northern Rivers, NSW Public Works partnered with Corrective Services Industries, the commercial arm of Corrective Services NSW, to solve an urgent need for temporary housing for flood-affected residents.

A design was developed to refurbish 115 existing demountable units into self-contained pods, and 50 purpose-built modular units. Inmates from Goulburn and Cessnock Correctional Centres used their expertise to deliver a total of 165 units quickly, forming part of the 546 units delivered under the Northern Rivers Temporary Housing Program.

Inmates expressed gratitude for the opportunity to support the flood recovery efforts, especially considering the impact on their own friends and families, while gaining and enhancing work skills and vocational training opportunities.

“We had a keen focus on getting inmates skilled and providing vocational training opportunities. It allowed them to broaden their skillsets.” - Blake Conwell, Director – Work and Education, Corrective Services NSW
