Background

The Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery is located in the heart of the Broken Hill CBD. Formally known as the Sully’s building, the heritage listed asset was constructed in the late 1800’s. The building was purchased by Broken Hill City Council in 1985 and is now the city’s main art gallery.

In 2016 the building required a full roof replacement due to extensive hail damage. As part of these works, the flooring, air conditioning, security system, and internal and external paintwork were improved.

Our role

NSW Public Works (NSWPW) provided project and contract management services throughout the life of the project. We delivered project value through administering multiple contracts simultaneously to eliminate construction delays and make best use of limited contractor availability.

Through our local presence, we provided expertise and knowledge in procurement when working in remote or regional areas of far west NSW.

By leveraging existing experience working on heritage related projects, we reduced risks to the Client through detailing and highlighting potential issues.

Outcomes

The project was completed in May 2022, delivered on schedule and within the allocated project budget while meeting strict deadlines for a nationally scheduled art exhibition due to open at the completion of construction.

Substantial project savings were made by staging construction works so the existing highly valued art collection could be stored on-site and not be required to be transported and stored in an accredited interstate storage facility.

We improved stakeholder engagement through procurement expertise, cost and time savings during construction including a high level of industry knowledge and targeted delivery strategies.

Client and customer feedback received was positive, most notably around the quality and timing of the work, allowing the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery to remain Broken Hill’s premier exhibition space.
