NSW Public Works successfully managed the Kiama Harbour enhancement for Crown Lands enhancing both safety and aesthetics of the area.

Background

A NSW Government project funded by Crown Lands to install a new seawall and waterside walk has been completed improving the safety, accessibility and appearance of Kiama Harbour. The path opened to the Public on 26 April 2023.

The Kiama Harbour project involved construction of a new seawall, an adjacent accessible footpath and ramp, new street furniture and a seating area, stainless steel handrails and balustrades, and landscaping. The concrete seawall has an embedded pattern of a whale based on artwork that was commissioned with Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council.

Our role

As project managers, NSW Public Works was responsible for overseeing the construction phase of the new seawall at Kiama Harbour.

Project Statistics

  • Seawall length: the newly constructed seawall spans 106 meters, offering substantial protection and aesthetic value to the harbour.
  • Pathway enhancements: the project introduced a wider path, ensuring better accessibility for everyone, from local families to visiting tourists.
  • Construction effort: the placement of balustrade mesh alone accounted for 172 hours of work.

Outcomes

The community gained a new and improved walkway that provides stronger protection against storms to safeguard Black Beach Reserve and Kiama Harbour Park while connecting people to local attractions like the rockpool and blowhole.
