Wollongong City Council’s ongoing expansion of Wollongong Waste and Resource Recovery Park aims to provide landfill space for the city’s waste and extend the life of the current landfill site.
NSW Public Works assisted the council to construct two new landfill cells (plus a piggy-back cell) and a new leachate storage pond as part of the expansion. We were involved in the procurement and construction phases, undertaking Superintendency of the works and carrying out the role of Construction Quality Assurance Engineer.
The two new cells were constructed side by side, comprising approximately 3.7 hectares of new landfill liner, with associated earthworks and surface water management components. The new leachate storage pond replaces the ponds decommissioned for the construction of the new landfill cells.

Key facts

  • Estimated filling time of the new cells is approximately 6 years
  • The new cells provide over 700,000 cubic metres of additional landfill storage volume (airspace)
  • The new leachate storage pond has an operational storage capacity of 6.4 megalitres
