Hunter Street Campus was identified by TAFE NSW as a campus that required significant work to bring it into compliance with existing Australian Standards and BCA requirements, primarily in regard to access and safety, and to improve the business performance of the campus.

NSW Public Works are managing the head design consultant and the ongoing construction work on site.  This includes: roof repairs, external masonry repairs, damp treatment, painting of the exterior and interior termite damage repair, fire service and protection upgrade, ventilation upgrade, lighting upgrade, alterations to stairways and doorways including the main entry, lift alterations, new access toilet and upgrade of other toilets, new extraction and dust filtration, new balcony and balustrading.

The older buildings are heritage listed and are of great significance in Newcastle’s history.  The heritage façade was identified for restoration as part of the NSW Stonework Program, managed through NSW Public Works' Sydney office. The Minister's Stonework Program and TAFE NSW co-funded the project.  In line with the vision of creating an upgraded interface between the Campus, the new light rail stop, medical centre cafes and gym, NSW Public Works is developing cost effective solutions to provide a kiosk and landscaping to the existing breakout areas.  This upgraded area will provide a place to relax, outdoor learning spaces, extra exhibition space for the art school and open up the Campus to the public.
