NSW Public Works were engaged to manage the Muswellbrook Hospital Emergency Department (ED) redevelopment for Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD). The redevelopment provided a range of expanded and enhanced facilities and services to meet the healthcare needs of communities in Muswellbrook and surrounding areas.

The project included the relocation of the ED to the ground floor of the existing hospital, which was required to meet the required functional and operational demands of a Level 3 ED in a major local district hospital.  The expanded facilities include 3 acute beds, 1 paediatric bed, 1 secure assessment/ mental health single room, 1 isolation room, 3 consult rooms.  The new ED also includes a ambulance bay, resuscitation bay, procedure room, plaster room, interview, staff and waiting room.

NSW Public Works' role was to provide leadership, project and contract management services to facilitate the design, documentation and construction of the redevelopment.  Construction had to be completed within and around the existing operational facilities and NSW Public Works implemented strategies to allow construction to proceed without adverse impacts on service delivery.  The project was funded through Restart NSW and local funding and has delivered an improved health service environment for patients, hospital staff and the Muswellbrook community.
